Sunday 22nd February saw the last round of the West Midlands Cyclocross League which had been delayed 2 weeks because of the snow. The race a Daventry was a race which required power and endurance which suited the SCC riders. The event was a top priority for Luke Turnbull who was leading the League.
The racing was good and in the under 10s race with Luke Turnbull riding strongly into 4th place, which was enough to secure the League Championship. Tian Franklyn riding second claim for SCC came 5th, giving him 11th in the league. Oliver Evans came 7th which gave him 36th in the league. Jamie Wolstencroft came 12th, and Nicolas Evans came 27th but second under 6 year old and 44th in the league.
In the under 12 category the race was dominated by a very fast improving Thomas Lane, feeling fit and fast from a winter of base training including some top quality Turbo training. Thomas was piped at the post for the win but came a spectacular second giving him 7th in the series. Dom Kilminster was 7th over the line giving him 14th in the league. Thomas Milward was 20th giving him 28th in the series.
Later in the day second claim rider Dan Bill road the cyclocross and came 2nd in the senior race and this secured him 3rd in the senior league and 2nd under 23 year old rider. He had raced the North Road Hard Riders Time Trial in the morning and been disappointed to have punctured with 3 miles to go, he still finished a creditable 18th in this prestigious event.
The notable thing from the league results in all the age categories is the improvement that the SCC riders have made through the season. This is not a surprise as we were all novices 6 months ago and now we have a champion in our club and I’m sure many more to come. A big thank you to Adam for coaching us and also a big thank you to all the parents without whom our riders would not be able to compete. Well done to all of you and here is to a successful and safe summer. |
