The SCC Reliability ride

The SCC Club Reliability ride is a winter 54 mile event through the Cotswolds, usually held in Feb as a "warm up" event to the road racing season. After thick snow caused the first ever postponement it was held a month later on 8th March, however the winter weather also made it's last appearance.. The principle of the event is that the riders must predict their time as accurately and fast as possible.

Just under 50 riders took part with excellent support from local Kenilworth and Coventry Clubs. Riders started at 9 am and left at 15 miinute intervals dependant on their predicted time. The largest group left at a predicted 3:30 hr time led by Club Chairman, Wedge Adams, the second largest group of faster riders led by Club Coach Tom Heenan left later for their predicted 3 hour time, but then the sunny pleasant weather left for the day to be replaced by lashing rain, strong winds and unseasonal cold weather.

Riding up the hills to Broadway Tower in strong wind sapped the strength of many riders with cold rain making visibility difficult and predicted times tough for the three hour group. However club riders are made of gritty stuff and Kenilworth Wheelers riding in good tight groups kept together over the winds hill tops and finished in very accurate times.

Taking advantage of a tail wind coming back to the start, John Meehan, Keith Walton and Tom Heenan powered the 3 hour group through some really dirty roads to come very close to their predicted time. Wedge Adams and Carl Conn came in just under their predicted time after tagging onto some excellent unattached riders.

At base a very welcome hot drink and cakes were laid on by the Club. Special mention must go to Keith Walton, despite being tired after his own efforts, stayed on until the last wet rider was in in just under 5 hours to ensure the "fun rider" got his warm drink after battling the hail that finished off the last winter day of 2009 !
