Stratford Open Time Trial

The weather forecast was for rain, wind and showers which meant for a nervous night for organisers and riders alike for the Stratford Cycling Club open time trial. The reality was quite different, the temperature was warm and it stayed dry, the wind was quite strong and seemed to be a head wind in all directions. The conditions led to a competitive time trial.

The early lead was taken by Team Echelon-Spuik rider Dan Bill, as a second claim member of Stratford this was quite popular. Dan was battered a little by the windy conditions, something that is not suited to his slight build. There was disappointment for Stratford’s Carl Conn who suffered a blow out and suffered that long walk back to the HQ we all dread.

As the racing progressed some quick times were posted and there was a little stress for young Alex Hamer of Wyre Forest as he punctured just as he was leaving for the start line. As expected the seeding worked and we were treated to some fast times every 10 minutes or so, with some equally fast rides popping up in between. Rider 50, James Wall of Stratford CC posted a 21:11 which initially looked like a very good time which would be hard to beat.

As the last times came in Scott Povey (Warwickshire Road Club) posted a 20:34 which was the first sub 21 for the day, this caused a ripple through the HQ as speculation as to whether his trademark fixed wheel was a help or hindrance to this great time. The last rider off was Richard Bradley (Shorter Rochford RT) and he also rode a scorcher to post a winning time of 21:29 to win the event by 5 seconds, taking the Vets prize at the same time.

First lady was Arja Scarsbrook (Team Echelon Spuik) she also too the Lady Vets prize. Alex Hamer of Wyre Forest put his puncturing problems behind him to ride a creditable 26:56 to be first Juvenile back. Full results are available on the PDF on this website and on the CTT website.

The event was well run and well marshalled, thanks to all who gave their time to allow us to race our bike. We look forward to welcoming you all back next year for our open and for those who qualify for the National 10 which we will be hosting on this course.
