LVRC SCC Race March 2010

The first open race of the season, organized by Stratford Cycling Club went without a hitch. Under the expert organization of Graham and Heather Sims, they even managed to arrange perfect weather for the challenging event. In beautiful spring sunshine the various category riders were split in to two races to test their climbing ability on the tough and undulating course.

The first race which included category A, B and C riders saw an early break and riders Mark West from Cult Racing and Desmond Gaylor from Kenton Road Club powered ahead together. Despite considerable effort from the rest of the pack, they were unable to catch the two escapees and after 1 hour 57 minutes, West was able to clinch the Kier Maris Trophy, (kindly donated by his parents after his untimely death). Gaylor finished the category A and B race in second place 33 seconds behind.

There was home interest in the second race for category D, E and F with two SCC riders, Keith Walton and new member Les Cooper, fighting for survival in the pack. Although the race splintered in two after 15 miles on the climb to Brailles, Walton fought a bloody battle to remain with his fellow competitors and finished an impressive 4th in category D and 13th place in the category C and D race only 2 minutes down. The race was won by David Phillips from Corinium CC in 1 hour 59 minutes, who took away the Mike Green Trophy (in memory of the former Stratford CC rider). Only 2 seconds behind was Mick Hill from Quest.

New kid on the block, Les Cooper, finished in 17th place in his race still looking strong at the end, and was pleased to have completed his first assignment for the club. No doubt we will see plenty more of him on the race circuit. The final category for E and F was won by Don Parry, Team Corley Cycles – Willen Hospice with Lance Ravenhill, Coventry Cycle Centre in second place.

Chairwoman, Miranda Harris would like to thank the Sims family and all the club members who helped make the event such a success. For more details about the club and forthcoming events, please see www.stratfordcc.co.uk
